Cold sores (Fever Blisters, Oral Herpes, Labial Herpes, Herpes Labialis, Herpes Fabrilis) are caused by a viral infection that attacks the skin and nervous system called Herpes Simplex Virus Type-1 (HSV-1). There are said to be six stages of development of the average Cold Sore:
Stage one, or the prodrome, where no sore is visible but there is a feeling of prickling or itchiness around the affected area.

Stage two, where swelling may start and the area may be slightly red.

Stage three brings with it the first signs of a blister.

Stage four is the most painful, and generally comes in the fourth day when a soft crust or ulcer forms.

Stage five, when a hard crust forms on the ulcer, this usually lasts for four days or so.

Stage six, which comes around the tenth day, leaves the sore red and slightly swollen, but without the hard scab.
